A reconstructed gentleman’s suit from
the late 1780-ies

Different styles of the 18th century are represented in the collection of silk and cotton fabrics from Durán Textiles. The designs range from late baroque via rococo to neoclassicism, reflecting the changing fashions during the century. We used some silks of the later style to create a reconstructed gentleman’s suit of the late 1780-ies. The costume is not a copy of an original garment, instead a fashion plate and a portrait was used as a starting point. The cut was constructed using a published pattern drawn from a suit from the period. This was adjusted in details as cuffs, collar and lapels to correspond with the pictures. All our knowledge of textile history, period cutting and sewing was used, but to give the costume charm and fit it to it’s occasion some artistic freedom and fantasy was allowed.

En rekonstruerad herrdräkt från
slutet av 1780-talet

I Durán Textiles kollektion av siden och bomullstyger finns mönster från senbarock till rokoko till nyklassicism som speglar utvecklingen av modet under hela 1700-talet. Några av de senare sidentygerna har använt i en rekonstruerad herrdräkt från 1780-talet. Dräkten är inte en kopia av något existerande plagg, istället användes en modeplansch och ett porträtt som utgångspunkt. Tillskärningen konstruerades utifrån ett uppmätt plagg från 1780-tal som justerades så att detaljer som krage, slag och ärmuppslag överensstämde med modeplanschen. Alla textilhistoriska kunskaperna om tillskärning sömnad och stil utnyttjades, men för att dräkten skall få sitt uttryck och passa i sitt sammanhang behövs också ett visst mått fantasi och konstnärlighet.

Currant – hand printing of the Linneus jubilee fabric

The original for Durán Textiles’ printed cotton Currant is a block printed lining of a bedspread kept in the Linnaean collections at his summerhouse in Linnés Hammarby outside Uppsala. Our reconstruction is a handmade screen print on cotton. It has red and white flowers on brown or blue ground.
