Robe à l’Anglaise – An English gown

From the printed silk Sippa made by Duran Textiles we decided to make a dress in the style of 1780-ties. It is a so called Robe à l’Anglaise with a petticoat in the same fabric. The bodice of the gown show the characteristic narrow panels in the back and deep pointed centre back. The front have a generous décolletage and is closed with hooks and eyes. The skirts of the gown are open in front and gathered to the waist in small tight pleats. The sleeves are long and narrow. At the wrists there are cuffs in purple taffeta, which is the only decoration of the dress, save from a sash in the same taffeta tied in a bow at the waist. The petticoat is made from straight panels pleated to a waistband. Beneath the petticoat and under petticoats a cul postiche or cul fausse (a false bum) is worn. This is a padded cushion tied to the waist, which makes the skirts stand out in the back. Laces from the shift are visible at the wrists and at the décolletage, and a full boned pair of stays, or corset, gives the body shape and posture. At the neck a silk chiffon neckerchief is worn, and a turban shaped silk hat with plumes finish the wide coiffure.

Av det tryckta sidenet Sippa från Duran Textiles AB har vi sytt upp en klänning i1780-tals modell. Det är en s.k. Robe à l’Anglaise med kjol i samma tyg. Livet har den karaktäristiska skärningen med smala paneler i ryggen som går ner i en djup snibb bak. Fram är livet djupt urringat och stängt med hyskor och hakar. Robens kjol är öppen fram och veckad med täta små veck mot livet. Ärmen är lång och smal och avslutas med uppvikta manschetter i violett taft, som är klänningens enda dekor förutom ett skärp med rosett i samma tyg. Kjolen i samma tyg är sydd av raka våder och veckad mot en midjelinning. Under kjolar och underkjolar bärs en cul postiche eller cul fausse (en falsk rumpa) en stoppad kudde som för ut kjolen bakåt. Spetsar från särken skymtar i dekolletaget och vid handleden, och en hårt benad korsett ger livets form och hållning. Till klänningen bärs en vit fischy av chiffong och en turbanliknade sidenhatt med plymer ovanpå den stora frisyren.

Swedish damask and cambric, fine linen weaving in 18th c. Sweden

Linen has been cultivated, processed and woven i Sweden since prehistory. Mostly coarse and middle fine quality was made for domestic use. A region in northern Sweden, Hälsingland and Ångermanland gave linen fibre of good quality thanks to the good soil and the intense and light summer. From this area tax was paid to the archbishop of Uppsala already in the 12th century.

Lin har odlats, beretts och vävts i Sverige sedan förhistorisk tid. Till största del vävdes grov och medelfin lärft (tuskaft) till husbehov. Hälsingland och Ångermanland med gynnsamma jordar och korta ljusa somrar gav en fin linfiber. Härifrån erlades tionde i linnelärft till Ärkebiskopen i Uppsala redan under 1100-talet.
