A gentleman’s costume from 1750 reconstructed

The original for the woven silk Viola was woven in Stockholm in the 1750-ties. For the presentation of the first collection from Durán Textiules AB in August 2004, I decided to make replica of a man’s costume from the mid 18th century, to show what the fabric looked like when made up as a historic garment.

A fashionable man’s clothing about 1750 comprised of coat, waistcoat and breeches made in the same fabric. A costume, kept in the Nordiska Museet, Stockholm was chosen as a model. The cutting diagram from a similar suit in the National museum of Copenhagen was used, and altered to my measures.

En rekonstruerad herrdräkt från 1750

Originalet till det vävda sidenet Viola vävdes i Stockholm på 1750-talet. Till presentationen av den första kollektionen tyger från Durán Textiles AB i augusti 2004 bestämde jag mig för att sy upp en herrdräkt från denna period för att visa hur tyget ser ut när det används till historisk kostym.

En moderiktig herrdräkt vid mitten av 1700-talet bestod av väst rock och byxor i samma tyg. Förebilden är en dräkt i Nordiska Museets samlingar. Jag utgick ifrån ett tillskärnings mönster från en uppmätt dräkt av liknande modell och datering från Nationalmuseet i Köpenhamn. Det anpassades till rätt storlek och justerades endast i några detaljer för att likna förebilden.
